IGNITE - Taster Day

Wow what a brilliant day.

The young people of Thirsk have had a great time at Carlton Lodge Activity Centre experiencing some brand new activities.

As part of the IGNITE project run by IVE, which North Yorkshire Youth is a partner, we put on a day of activities all based around heritage and fun.

Forty nine young people got the chance to make Mallets, stools and rolling pins using techniques from the industrial revolution, all run by the Heritage Craft Alliance. The buzz in the room when the young people took part was amazing and really showed that young people are always interested in learning something new. Even if it is some that has been around for many years!!!

We got some amazing feedback with loads interested in taking part in future activities. With this being a pilot for the Heritage Lottery Fund – Kick the Dust programme we hope to be putting on similar events for the next four years.

Alongside these amazing craft activities we have also had the pleasure of the Writing Squad. They have run workshops on creative writing and that mix of physical activity and creatively worked really well and to see so many young people engaged in a writing workshop was brilliant.

All these activities have been linked with some problem solving and archery, another ancient skill, run by Carlton Lodge staff and from the feedback we have received the young people have had a blast.
